The 250cc segment is heating up with a host of manufacturers taking interest in developing and launching new bikes in this category. TVS doesn’t want to be left behind in this race and with their recent tie-up with BMW, developing a 250cc sportsbike was bound to happen.
Company officials from TVS have confirmed that the first bike to roll out of the TVS-BMW partnership will be a 250cc motorcycle. The bike is already under development and should be out by the end of 2014. BMW and TVS will jointly develop the new higher capacity bikes but both companies will market their bikes individually. So a TVS bike won’t be sold at a BMW Motorrad dealership and vice-versa.

TVS Racing, TVS Motors’ racing division, will have a big part to play in the bikes development so expect stonking performance refined as per BMW standards. The smallest capacity bike that BMW has in their current line-up is the F 650GS. This will also provide an opening for BMW to sell lower capacity bikes with their trademark high quality standards in India as well as other developing markets.

TVS too hasn’t stepped into the 200cc plus category even though its competition has been selling 200-250cc bikes in the market and since a long time too. Their Apache RTR has 160cc and 180cc variants which have now come of age. Even with regular updates for both these bikes, including an ABS option for the Apache RTR 180, the sales volumes are much lower than Honda and Bajaj who are leading this segment.
