Electric scooter sales in August 2022: Hero leads

By Biketoq Editor

India has shown an exceptional response in the adaptation of electric vehicles and month after month the EVs are flying off the shelf of various automakers. Just in the month of August 2022 itself, according to VAHAN registration statistics as of September 1, a total of 50,076 E2Ws were registered nationwide in August. Resulting in an increase of 12.7% over July, with 46,491 of those units coming from the top 10 E2W manufacturers.

According to the organization’s data, Hero Electric is the number one EV automaker that sold the most electric two-wheelers in the nation. By selling 10,213 electric scooters in India during the month as opposed to the 8,786 it had sold in July 2022, it has once again maintained the top rank on the list, showing an increase of 16.24% MoM. The company has now exceeded the benchmark of 10,000 units per month twice. In March of this year, the same occurred for the first time.

The second spot on the list was acquired by the Gurugram-based electric scooter manufacturer Okinawa Autotech. Compared to the 8,098 electric scooters it had sold in July 2022, the company sold 8,245 electric scooters in India in August 2022. The OEM only had a 1.82% MoM growth but it still managed to be in the top 5 electric vehicle manufacturers in the country.

Greaves Electric Mobility Private Limited-owned Ampere Electric was the third runner on the list of the top 10 EV OEMs in the nation. The EV automaker sold 6,396 scooters in the month, held onto the third position, but was almost supplanted by a hard-charging TVS, whose iQube electric scooter sales rocketed up by almost 50% compared to July to 6,282 units. To put things in perspective, compared to the same month last year, TVS iQube sales have increased by over 10 times (651 units sold).

However, the biggest growth witnessed by any automaker belongs to the Bengaluru-based EV startup Ather Energy. With a staggering 297% YoY increase, the company was able to sell 6,410 electric scooters in India last month. Although Ather’s wholesale sales data for August 2021 isn’t available for a YoY comparison, it’s important to note that the EV manufacturer saw its highest-ever monthly sales in August 2022.

Ather entered the top five on the list after pushing Ola Electric further down. Registrations of its first scooter, the Ola S1 Pro, fell for a fourth straight month to 3,421 units, an 11% drop from July. Ola’s S1 Pro has been plagued by instances of complaints about quality and dependability in recent months, and the start-up has now turned to offer festive season bonuses in an effort to attract users. With the release of the more affordable S1 scooter, which will begin shipping on September 7 and has an introductory price of Rs 1 lakh, Ola Electric is also hoping to see an increase in sales.

With 2,554 units of the Chetak electric scooter sold, Bajaj Auto finished the month in seventh place. Furthermore, with mere 1,604 registered units, Revolt Motors reported a decline in sales of the RV400 electric motorbike in August. Benling India came in ninth with 1,045 scooters sold. Meanwhile, Battery maker Okaya came in tenth with 878 units of its Faast high-speed scooter. Following a number of fire accidents this year, Pure EV registrations further declined to 875 units, beating Okaya to the final slot. Meanwhile, 577 units of Bounce’s Infinity E1 were registered in the month of August 2022.
